Haumea

Howdy! I’m Haumea!

I was discovered by the Earth scientists in 2004 by Micheal Brown… or was it José Luis Oritz Moreno? Actually, the two got into a big ol’ dispute over who could get the credit of my discovery! Whoever may have found me, I was then gifted my first name: “Santa”. This was because my discovery was just after Christmas! Then, I was given my current name of Haumea after the Hawaiian goddess of birth.

Honestly, I think that name fits because I’m shaped like an egg! I won’t hatch into a little birdie, though. The reason I’m shaped like this is because I spin so fast. It only takes four hours for me to complete a whole day! Imagine having to do your daily routine in that short window of time! Welcome to my day!

I also have two little moons named Hi’iaka and Namaka, both named after children of the goddess Haumea. I think those names fit, too, because I love them both with all my core! Also, I’m one of a few non-planet objects in the Solar System discovered to have a ring! How do you like them apples, Saturn?
